Nick Barstow is a musical director, arranger, composer and performer. He is Musical Director for the Donmar Warehouse’s critically acclaimed UK premiere of ‘Next to Normal’ and is currently the musical director, orchestrator and arranger of the Watermill Theatre’s brand new adaptation of ‘The Wizard of Oz'.
Recently as orchestrator and arranger, Nick orchestrated the first UK revival of Tim Rice’s ‘From Here to Eternity’, and co-orchestrated the West End premiere of Jason Robert Browns ‘The Last Five Years’ and the London return of ‘Zorro!’, both for all-new actor-musician productions. As musical director, he led the hit staging of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ in the West End. Over the pandemic Nick worked on an extensive array of live and streamed theatre, including new productions of ‘Closer Than Ever’ and 'I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change' (filmed onstage at the London Coliseum), both of which are available on demand on BroadwayHD. He composed an original score for 'Peter Pan' at The Barn Theatre, Cirencester for Christmas 2020 and worked with David Hunter and Caroline Kay to create 'The Space Between', written and recorded in isolation and winner of an On-Com award for exceptional digital content. Together with Alice Fearn and Kirk Jameson he created Intermissions which began as a live broadcast concert series, and culminated in a West End gala at the Vaudeville (now available on Stream.Theatre). He orchestrated and supervised the UK premiere of ‘Rags’ and was a lead producer for the newly released Original London Cast album, alongside the show’s lyricist Stephen Schwartz. His actor-musician production of ‘A Christmas Carol’, produced by Peter Brook Equity Ensemble award winners Antic Disposition, has run multiple seasons in the historic Middle Temple Hall since 2017 and will return this Christmas. A studio cast album is now available featuring Brian Blessed as the Ghost of Christmas Present.
As a performer and producer, Nick runs cabaret series ‘RE:Arrangement’ which was the closing event of 2021’s Udderbelly Festival at the London Wonderground, having originated at Brasserie Zedel in August 2018 since touring the UK and Ireland. The show featured on the ‘Stages - Floating Festival’ in October 2019, tying in to the launch of the studio album of the same name featuring X Factor winner Matt Terry and Steps star Faye Tozer. In February 2019 he produced a charity single for The Samaritans featuring ‘Wicked’ leading ladies Alice Fearn and Sophie Evans.
